Goodwood Art Foundation – a new outdoor art space in Sussex

Art looks amazing in nature, and there is proof of that at Goodwood Art Foundation, which opened in 2025 near Chichester in the south of England.
Art pieces by living artists and those who are no longer with us are scattered across the 70-hectare estate of Goodwood Art. The landscape is stunning, and all the artworks are placed so cleverly that it feels as if they’ve always been there. There are routes designed to experience them, and the pace of the routes is enchanting as well.
There is one piece that is especially striking: an audio installation by Scottish artist Susan Philipsz in the ancient forest. Suddenly, one can hear the artist’s voice singing among the trees from a loudspeaker. The sound reaches the listener from various directions, creating an embracing effect. It’s very sensorial and feels perfectly in place for that particular setting.
Octetra (Three Elements Stack) (1968/2021), an art piece by Isamu Noguchi, a late Japanese-American artist, is one of the highlights of the collection, primarily because of its striking color – a vivid red that is visible from almost every point of the outdoor art space. Noguchi’s fascination with geometry is stunning.
After an art walk among the trees, chalk quarries, and meadows, it feels nice to sit down for a meal made from produce sourced from the local farm: lamb, beer, wine, and cheese. The dining area of Cafe24 certainly deserves a separate accolade – it looks as if the terrace glides into the ancient forest. The cuisine is gut-friendly, and the portions are small – all in line with current dining styles.
It’s an amazing place to spend the whole day: contemplate nature, enjoy stunning art pieces, reflect for a while, eat delicious food, and simply reconnect with oneself.
